Consan is a unique chemical formulation for the home, inside and out. The original quaternary amine chemicals were developed and used as fungicides and disinfectants for a broad range of applications. The quat amines are essentially poly substituted nitrogen compounds. They are long chain carbon radicals that are highly stable in solution.
Absolutely, Consan is completely biodegradable in the presence of organic material. After biodegradation the quaternary amine chemicals are broken down into harmless carbon products such as carbon dioxide. The breakdown of the quat material is generally 24 to 48 hours, depending on weather conditions or other factors.
Because of the rapid biodegradation, Consan is considered curative in nature. Consan is not systemic but kills on contact. Consan kills pathogens before they have an obvious effect on the turf or plant tissue, so it can also be considered a preventive treatment.
Consan works by destroying the outer cell membrane of the pathogen. It does not act systemically, but eliminates fungus, algae or even odors with surface contact. Consan must come into contact with the pathogen to be effective, therefore, thorough coverage is necessary. When Consan reaches the pathogen, control will occur immediately, or while the surface is wet with spray solution.
Since the quat amine chemicals in Consan are completely water soluble, any rain or irrigation following application will wash the chemicals off the turf or leaf surface and into the soil where it will begin to biodegrade. It is always advisable to apply Consan prior to irrigation to increase the residual action. Since Consan is so environmentally safe, it can be applied on an as needed basis every 10 to 14 days. Consan can also be applied as a spot treatment to diseased turf areas, golf cart paths, walkways, and patios.
A noteworthy point to remember about Consan is that it is a cationic chemical. Since cationic compounds are only compatible with other cationic or nonionics, we do not advise mixing Consan with other products. This is especially true of iron based micro nutrients (heavily anionic) and some dye marker products. Always avoid applying Consan in very hot weather during the heat of the day to prevent a phytotoxic reaction as with any chemical applied in this manner. If in doubt about applying Consan, try treating a small area for any possible adverse reactions. If phytotoxicity is visible within 24 hours, reduce the concentration rate before continuing applications to large areas.
